Chapter 4. SenaMeanwhile, he and Izumi rushed along the seaside, drops of water dazzling like thousands of diamonds around them, salt sparkling in the sun, wind smacking Leo’s hair, and their clothes soaking in the seawater. At least this was a much better alternative than getting so sweaty before.Once they reached the other side of the shore, the silverhead led them to the small hill a bit further from the beach, a patch of grass covering it against all the surrounding sand. Leo stopped his horse and collapsed on the ground as he slid down, his breathing ragged, hair sticking to his flushed cheeks.“You’re going to… get the sand all over.” Izumi breathed just as heavily as he did, but he also slowly sat down, placing himself near Leo. His hands brushed through his hair, trying to bring back any semblance of order to his usually fluffy locks. “Seriously, what were you thinking? And it stopped right after you led it to the water. You’re really…”He didn’t finish the sentence, so Leo could only try and guess what was going through that silver head. But his guess was as good as any, the boy who was only a few months older than him hardly ever spoke plainly.It didn’t matter, for Leo subconsciously knew that he was also admired by that squire. The moment of changing the trajectory of their life finally came after they had escaped with their lives from the Spirit of the Sea.“I just knew the Sea was calling it back,” Leo said mysteriously, and he sat up, a soft smile on his face. Izumi looked back at him, as if weighing this expression in his heart and sighed, long eyelashes hiding away his azure eyes.“The Sea Guardian would indeed be satisfied with your deed… As stupid and reckless as it was... You will face many dangers like these on your delegations now, so don’t think that would work every time.”A chuckle followed his words, breaking through the screaming of cicadas and increasingly restless waves. The sun finally started to travel down on the sky and the breeze carried with it cool air. Finally a sign of the heatwave passing by.“That’s true! Sena, you should become my squire and make sure I don’t do anything stupid!”“Hah?! No way I’m running around after you or polishing your shitty sword! Did you see how many nicks it got already?”The knight stood up and approached his mare, reaching for the package he carried this whole horseback ride. Holding a long box in both hands, he turned to face Izumi again.“Then… be my knight.”There was no snarky response this time, the silverhead’s eyes wide like saucers, and Leo felt heart fluttering in his chest. He could no longer take it back, and his plans escaped the realms of his wild fantasies.The sounds around them seemed to become muffled, only the soft whooshing of the waves between him and Izumi.“Leo-kun, I…” The squire hesitated and he looked away. “You know that my ambition is to become a royal knight.”“The king’s not gonna have you, alright?” Leo was prepared for these words, so he wasted no beat to respond, mustering all his confidence in his voice, and it lowered a few registers. “You’ll stay with me, you’ll follow me, and he will have no power to hurt you. I will protect you from all that I went through.”“...” It seemed like the heir of the Senas was still hesitating or thinking deeply about it, but after a few moments he shook his head and got up a bit. He took a different pose, and Leo realized that now he was kneeling, his back straightened, and he looked up at the knight. “...You got it all wrong, you know. If I’m to be the knight and you’re my lord, then it would be my duty to protect you.”“Huh? I guess so…” He could feel his voice trembling, the confidence leaving him almost immediately as Leo wondered for a moment what it would entail to protect him. A knight who just dashed into the water while being chased by the sea spirit. A boy who was supposed to be already dead. A mortal teen who the Everlasting King took an interest in. A monster who could outlive the noble in front of him and survive against all the odds. An heir of a family rising in fame. “But I don’t need—.”“Yes, yes, you do.” Izumi got between Leo’s doubts, his sharp stare piercing the standing knight. His turquoise eyes seemed even brighter against his wet hair and still-a-bit-pink cheeks. “I’m already kneeling, you know? So you’re not taking that back, idiot.”“But…”“I get it, Leo-kun. Don’t make it so complicated.”But Sena, it was that complicated. Your ambitions were at stake, Leo’s twisted role in the kingdom would jeopardize it all. He was no Oracle, but the young knight knew that resisting the king would bring more troubles. And Leo adored your beauty and your dedication to your dreams, and the care he was already surrounded with…
Leo wanted to say it all out loud, but it would only tie their fates tighter together. As tempting as it was.“I shall swear my loyalty to you, Leo-kun.”But he had no right to hesitate like that anymore, did he? Not when Izumi looked at him with so much determination, with so much… It was devotion. The same kind with which Izumi stared earlier at the kelpie - the Sea Guardian’s legendary steed.He felt adrenaline rushing to his head, and the young knight opened the package he was holding, revealing a beautiful silver rapier to his soon-to-be retainer. The blade was thin but sturdy, Leo was already developing a sense for practical and durable weapons after breaking so many in his training. The handle was covered by a blue-dyed rose, ensuring no harm would ever meet Izumi’s slender fingers. Every part of this beautiful weapon Leo picked while thinking of his—soon to be—beautiful knight.“I want to name it Lionheart,” he said softly, his hands still trembling as Izumi reached inside the box, taking the blade in his pale hand. “For my very first knight, for a man so brave he would follow me into the battlefield, but also into prosperity.”“Lionheart…” Izumi mused over the name, and the young knight eagerly stared at him. But to his surprise, Izumi didn’t say anything else but gave Leo the same devout look, after examining the blade for a moment.The youngest knight of this era swallowed loudly and took a step back. Not to run, however, but to grab his broadsword that he carelessly threw on the ground before. In the rush of their experience, he drew it out, and as soon as they got here, he didn’t bother with sheathing it.The moment had come. He was about to take the first knight under his service.He placed the flat side of his sword on Izumi’s left shoulder.“Izumi from House Sena… have you undertaken to accept the accolade of Knighthood that was offered to you at the Lands under House Tsukinaga jurisdiction?”“...I have.” Izumi hesitated for a moment, but his stare remained on Leo.“Do you… now swear by all that you hold sacred, true, and holy that you will honor and defend your Lord and His lands?”“I will.”“Izumi from House Sena…” Leo took a deep breath, trying to shake off the rest of his nervousness, Izumi’s answers affirming that he couldn’t back away anymore. He only had to find the right words now… Fortunately, he did look into the texts of oaths before coming to the West Coast.“You have been deemed fit for this high estate, and have indicated your willingness to accept this honor from My hand. You are… under my care from today to my deathbed. And... I vow to protect you and your family on this sword, and my honor as a knight, and my power as Leo of House Tsukinaga. Accept this sword: Lionheart, a symbol of bravery and courage, the sign of the bond between you and me as… A knight and lord. Now…” He stumbled. There was no herald to proceed with their private ceremony further, and he was no King to demand vows of loyalty. His knight—as loyal and bound to him as one could be—was yet to be officially accoladed.“...I render homage and fealty to my Lord—Leo from House Tsukinaga—by the Right of Chivalry and Feudal Conduct of the Kingdom of Eidrheim.” When he stopped, Izumi easily picked up, as if he was preparing for this moment his whole life. “He will, from this day forward, be my Liege Lord. I will remain true in all ways, serving with my experience, strength, and wisdom as long as this life allows me. Be loyal of hands and mouth, I vow on my life and the sword my Lord offered, and by my honor and the high ideals of the Five Guardians of the Realm. So say I, Izumi of House Sena.”“I… accept your homage and fealty, and pledge to you that from this day forward until the end, I will honor your order and defend your rights as a Peer, and that I… will protect the trust you have placed in Me. And Sena—.” Leo interrupted the severity of the moment, breaking out of the character he never dreamed he would become. Under different circumstances, he would be the one pledging to the lord of a larger family. “Follow me as your Lord and as a Peer even when everyone turns on me. And stop me if I stray and turn into a demon or a monster…” His heart jumped up to his throat when Izumi’s serious expression turned into shock and confusion. Fighting back the guilt, the knight continued: “And I vow to remain mighty with justice, tempered with mercy as this life and the Five allow me.”“Leo-kun…” Izumi opened his mouth, clearly surprised by the sudden request, so different from the knighting ceremonies held in the capital. He seemed like he wanted to ask something, but the moment wasn’t right, the private ceremony defining their future relations was still ongoing. Leo wished he could take his moment of weakness back when he saw how the silverhead furrowed his brow. “My Liege Lord is only a mortal, abiding by the laws upheld by the Five, and the perils he speaks of cannot happen within the boundaries of the known world… But I shall protect His kindness.”A reverent silence fell between them, the holy vows spoken and the strings of fate tied in a holy union. Becoming one’s knight and one’s lord wasn’t a right bestowed by the Spirits of the Land, and the Immortal King did not seem to care for such a custom, the oaths of loyalty created by the humans themselves and endorsed by the other Guardians, praising the virtue of it. Leo thought that perhaps taking their vows of chivalry in front of the Sea—and after encountering one of its Spirits—was symbolic. He lowered his sword and looked at the vast waters around them, holding back the tears threatening to ruin this sacred moment.Izumi called him “kind,” but he did not doubt that the one truly kind was his first knight, the man who just gave up on his ambitions for Leo’s sake. He dreamt countless times that he had escaped reality and sworn fealty to Eichi just like that, only to be reminded of his and his family’s ambitions. The Heir of Myst did it with nearly no hesitation, as if he had only waited for Leo to ask… truly, Izumi Sena was his Lionheart.“Shall we head back… My Lord?”“Huh?” Leo flinched, consumed by the scenery and the soft Music of the Sea yet again. He nearly forgot Izumi was still with him, probably waiting for him to say something. “I— Yeah, maybe? Wait, what?”Izumi smirked at the complete gibberish that left his mouth, and Leo blinked a few times, his mouth hanging open as he processed these few simple words.“No… no, no! None of this ‘My Lord’ nonsense!! We’re still friends, Sena! Friends!”“Should have thought about that before you knighted me, you shitty lord~!”“I just said—Wait, don’t insult me in the same breath! I don’t know what to be mad about! You bully!”
